Andrew Jackson Named SAE International Fellow

WARRENDALE, Pa., Aug. 7, 2013 -

SAE International announced that Andrew Jackson was elected as a 2012-2013 SAE Fellow. Jackson and the other Fellow inductees were recognized during ceremonies at the SAE 2013 World Congress.

 

Jackson is professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics. His move to academia followed a 35-year career in research and development. He retired from ExxonMobil in 2009.

Jackson joined Mobil Oil in 1974. His research in tribology and lubricants resulted in 16 patents and 45 papers, with four best paper awards. He was a member of the board of directors of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) from 1987-97 and president in 1995-96. From 2002-09, Jackson served as editor of STLE’s Tribology Transactions.

He served as chair of the SAE Engine Oil Viscosity Classification Task Force, which sponsors SAE J300. During his tenure, work groups were established to address commercial engine oil issues, rheology effects on fuel economy, and high VI base stocks. He also was a member of the SAE Lubricants Awards Board from 1998-2000, serving as chair in 2000.

He received an SAE Arch T. Colwell Merit Award, the ASME Mayo D. Hersey Award, the STLE International Award, and an ACS Hero of Chemistry Award. He is a fellow of ASME, IMechE and STLE. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2009.

Jackson earned his bachelor's and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Imperial College in London.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
