New SAE International Webcast Will Explore Variable Oil Pumps and CAE Based Strategies

WARRENDALE, Pa., March 14, 2014 - SAE International offers the free webcast, “CAE Based Strategies to Improve Reliability of Variable Oil Pumps,” which will be held Wed., April 23 at 10 a.m. U.S. EDT.

This webcast will present a complete loop of calculation, with detailed focus on component reliability, to show the benefits of virtual prototyping in developing and optimizing the robustness of a generic variable oil pump. Benefits of this simulation include reducing the number of prototypes, exploring the effects of extreme working conditions (which are never easy to reproduce experimentally), and reducing time to market of a new pump. As industry attempts to reduce tailpipe emissions from internal-combustion engines, vehicle OEM and components suppliers are adopting a variety of strategies to address the challenge.

The market demand for higher performance and lower fuel consumption of a new age powertrain is leading to demand for development of hydraulic systems including pumps that absorb less power. Pierburg Pump Technology is facing this stiff demand today with some brand new products. One of these products is the variable displacement vane oil pump (VOP), which replaces traditional spur gears and gerotor ones. These pumps offer a big improvement in power consumption and wide flexibility in terms of oil flow control strategies. Pierburg Pump Technology will show how it uses CAE-based strategies, from systems level to fluids to mechanical analysis, to design and develop variable oil pumps. The company will present structural verification of the components and lifetime prediction of the same, offering case studies that show how the problems were successfully solved. Webcast attendees will be invited to interact with the experts during a question-and-answer segment.

Speakers will include:

- Riccardo Maccherini, Simulation Engineer, Pierburg Pump Technology

- Padmesh Mandloi, Regional Support & Services Manager, ANSYS Inc.

Moderator will be Lisa Arrigo, Custom Electronic Products Editor, SAE International.
