Clayton L. Munk Named SAE International Fellow

WARRENDALE, Pa., April 24, 2014 -

SAE International announced that Clayton L. Munk was one of 22 members elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow. He will be recognized during the upcoming SAE 2014 Aerospace Manufacturing and Automated Fastening Conference & Exhibition, September 23-25 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

 

Munk is a Technical Fellow with Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) at the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington, where he leads major research projects for Advanced Wing and Fuselage Assembly.

Munk has more than 27 years experience in the field of assembly and automation at Boeing. He identifies enabling technologies and creates, develops, tests and integrates new assembly methods and flow-based assembly line processes. He also provides automated assembly and design consultation to both commercial and military customers.

He has developed and implemented technical solutions on multiple airplane programs within Boeing Commercial Airplanes and influenced Boeing Defense Systems program manufacturing strategies in the aerospace industry. Munk’s contributions have led to a significant impact on the manufacturing and assembly efficiencies that have allowed Boeing to improve quality and lower costs in product production. He holds four patents with eight patents pending.

Munk received a Boeing Replication Award in 2012 for the implementation of Single Piece Takt Time Horizontal Wing Assembly methods, and he received the SAE International Forest R. McFarland Award in 2008. He has been involved with SAE International and its Automated Fastening Conferences (AEROFAST) for the past 20 years and is an SAE International EMB Air and Space Group Member. He holds a Master’s of Technology Management Degree and a Manufacturing Engineering Technology Degree from Brigham Young University.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
