Derby Middle School Teachers Win SAE Gary Dickinson Award for Teaching Excellence
WARRENDALE, Pa., Nov. 17, 2005 -
Mary Sanders and Patricia Schneider, teachers at
Derby
Middle School in
Birmingham, Mich., are recipients of SAE International’s 2005 Gary Dickinson Award for Teaching Excellence.
The award, established in 2001, recognizes middle school teachers who have made exemplary use of SAE International’s A World In Motion program. More commonly known as AWIM, the program is designed to increase interest in math and science in the classroom. The award honors Gary Dickinson, an automotive industry leader who played a major role in the development of AWIM for middle school students.
Sanders, a seventh grade teacher at
Derby
Middle School, has been teaching science for more than 25 years. In addition to her involvement with AWIM, she is a member of the National Science Teachers Association, the Michigan Science Teachers Association and the Michigan Earth Science Teachers Association. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the
University of
Michigan, a master’s degree from
Michigan
State
University and an Educational Specialist certification from
Wayne
State
University.
Schneider, a math teacher and leader of
Derby
Middle School’s gifted program, has been teaching first through 10th grade for 30 years. A member of SAE International and the K-12 Education Committee, she has been recognized with the Outstanding Service to AWIM and Manufacturing Leadership for the Future awards. She holds multiple degrees from
Wayne
State
University.
