German Research Team Receives SAE Award for Paper

WARRENDALE, Pa., June 16, 2008 - A team of five engineers from Germany is the recipient of SAE International's Colwell Merit Award. The team was honored at the SAE 2008 World Congress in Detroit.

The Colwell Merit Award, established in 1965, annually recognizes the authors of outstanding papers presented at an SAE conference or SAE section meeting. The late Arch T. Colwell, who first funded this award, served SAE International in many capacities for nearly 50 years, including a term as President in 1941.

This award is funded through the SAE Foundation. In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

The following individuals are recognized for co-authoring the paper, "A New Design Principle of Active Receiving Antennas Applied with a High Impedance Amplifier-Diversity-Module in a Compact Multi-Band-Antenna-System on a Plastic Trunk Lid" (SAE paper #2006-01-0480). The paper explores locating radio antennas within vehicle trunk lids.

Heinz Lindenmeier
Lindenmeier is the director of engineering for ASMIC-Consulting in Germany. Previously, he was a professor and director of the Institute of High Frequency Technology and Mobile Communication at the University of Bundeswehr, Munich.

Lindenmeier is the author of more than 180 publications, including scientific papers, books, and publications for conferences held by SAE International, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the International Union of Radio Science and the Institute of Engineering and Technology. He has received several awards, including an award from the Society of Information Technology, an Oral Presentation Award from SAE International and a German Institute of Inventions Award. He has been elected into the German Gallery of Inventors of the German Office on Patents and Trademarks for more than 150 patents and patent applications.

Lindenmeier studied electrical engineering and information technology at the Technical University of Munich. He resides in Planegg, Bavaria.

Leopold Reiter
Reiter is a professor at the University of the Bundeswehr, Munich, where he works in the Institute of High Frequency Technology and Mobile Communication.

Reiter has published more than 80 contributions for technical journals, books and conferences, including those held by SAE International and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In 2000, he won the Award for Technical Excellence at the International Symposium on Automotive Technology of Automation.

Reiter holds a degree in electrical communication engineering from the Technical University of Munich. He also holds a doctorate in electrical engineering. Reiter resides in Gilching, Bavaria.

Ashraf Ramadan
Ramadan is a project manager of active antenna development at FS Antennentechnik (FSA) GmbH in Bavaria, Germany. The company is a subsidiary of the German firm GABLER. Prior to joining FSA, Ramadan was on staff at the Institute of High Frequency Technology and Mobile Communication at the University of Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Force University), Munich.

Ramadan holds a patent with the German Office of Patents and Trademarks, and is the author of several technical papers on electronics and active antennas for mobile communications.

Ramadan received his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from universities in Egypt and France, respectively. He earned his doctorate in electronics and communications from the German Federal Armed Force University in Munich.

Jochen Hopf
Hopf is a professor at the Institute of High Frequency Technology and Mobile Communication at the University of Bundeswehr, Munich.

Hopf has published more than 80 contributions for technical journals, books and conferences, including those held by SAE International and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is a recipient of the Award for Technical Excellence from the International Symposium on Automotive Technology of Automation.

Hopf holds a degree in communication engineering and a doctorate from the Technical University of Munich.

Stefan Lindenmeier
Lindenmeier is a professor and head of the Institute for High Frequency Technology and Mobile Communication at the University of Bundeswehr, Munich. Previously, he led the research group for antennas and RF-sensors at the DaimlerChrysler Research and Technology Centre.

Lindenmeier has made more than 100 contributions to scientific journals, books and conferences in the fields of microwave techniques, antennas and propagation. He is a recipient of the Dr. Georg Spinner High Frequency Award and the EEEFCOM Innovation Award.

Lindenmeier obtained his undergraduate degree and doctorate from the Technical University of Munich.
