The N.C. Transportation Museum is located on the site of what was once Southern Railway Company's largest steam locomotive servicing facility. J.P. Morgan, Southern's owner, chose the site because of its location midway between the railroad's major terminal points of Washington, D.C., and Atlanta, Ga. Construction of the Shops began in 1896, and they were named in honor of the first president of Southern Railway, Samuel Spencer. During its peak, Spencer Shops employed nearly 3,000 people, which directly and indirectly provided most of the jobs for the towns of Spencer, East Spencer and other surrounding Rowan County communities. Today the museum is one of the countrys premier resources of the history and science of Americas transportation. The site contains authentic train depot, antique automobiles, and 37-stall roundhouse that include 25 steam and diesel locomotives and other exhibit areas. The N.C. Transportation Museum features many exhibit areas that include Master Mechanics Office, Flue Shop, and the Roundhouse. The SAE International Carolina Section family day outing will include general admission, narrated train ride, turntable ride tickets, picnic lunch and parking. The Antique Automobile Club of America Car Show is free to all attendees. Come and see >100 of the most beautiful Classic Cars.
