What: SAE SoCal Open House at Motivo Engineering

When: Saturday, January 12, 2013 10:00 a.m. - 02:00 p.m.

Where: 19821 Hamilton Ave, Torrance, CA 90502 (Just North of Alpine Village. SW of the 405/110 interchange)

Who: Motivo is a nimble, creative engineering company focused on mechanical and electrical system design and prototype builds with an emphasis on integrated electro-mechanical systems. Motivo develops products and prototypes in diverse market segments including automotive, defense, robotics and clean energy.

How: FREE to attend. Lunchtime refreshments will be served.

Toyota engineers will make a presentation on the Development of the 2012MY Prius Plug-in Hybrid as well as a presentation on The Role of Fuel Cell Vehicles and the Hydrogen Fueling Network in the Toyota Pathway to Sustainable Mobility.

Toyota is a market leader in gasoline/electric hybrid technology. As of October, 2012 Toyota has sold over 4.6 million hybrids worldwide with over 1 million sales in 2012 alone. In the United States, these numbers are 1.8 million and 270 thousand. Toyota has over 50% of the US hybrid market and the Prius is the number one selling hybrid model.

In presentations to the SAE Southern California Section during the 2009-2010 Section year, Toyota engineers talked about engineering for fuel efficiency and cleaner emissions. The features and function of a standard Prius were presented in the fall. The relative merits of Toyota alternative fuel programs were presented in the spring. At that time it was predicted that, although EVs (electric vehicles) would provide advantages for commuting, FCVs (fuel cell vehicles) showed the most promise for the future. Toyota presented data that indicated, near term, gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles would offer the best compromise in fuel efficiency, clean emissions and affordability.

On January 22, 2013 at 07:00 p.m. at the Toyota museum in Torrance, Toyota engineers will, again, describe near-term Toyota plans in two presentations:
- Development of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid System, presented by Heraldo Stefanon
- The Role of Fuel Cell Vehicles and the Hydrogen Fueling Network in Toyota’s Pathway to Sustainable Mobility, presented by Jacquelyn Birdsall
