Advancements in truck tire & wheel systems are improving vehicle operating costs and reducing environmental impact. We'll cover three topics that are leading the way in today's truck market, and finding relevance in the automotive market as well. Our speakers are seasoned veterans of the industry.

Inflation pressure management: Commercial truck tires are the second highest maintenance cost for today's trucking fleets, with fuel being #1. Air carries the load in any tire, but what is being done about maintaining proper tire pressure? There are four types of systems on the market today: Manual, Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, Automatic Tire Inflation Systems, and Central Tire Inflation Systems. Mr. Cohn will look at these systems and determine what is best for your needs.

Internal tire balance materials: The use of proprietary chemical compounds inserted into the cavity of truck tires allows for balancing without environmentally-unfriendly lead weights. Mr. Sharp will discuss the development of these internal balancing compounds.

Wide single tires replacing duals: Development of wide single tires with very low profile is having success with modern construction techniques and efforts. Advantages are lighter weight and lower rolling distance for better fuel economy.

OUR SPEAKERS

Al Cohn is a 32 year veteran of the trucking industry. He spent 28 years with Goodyear in a variety of assignments related to commercial tires including: tire compounder, tire designer, field engineering, sales, and marketing. In January 2006, he joined Pressure Systems International (PSI) out of San Antonio, Texas as Director New Market Development & Engineering Support. PSI is the industry leader in automatic tire inflation systems for commercial vehicles.

Asa Sharp worked 35 years at Goodyear, including 17 years as an engineer in tire development and 18 years in truck tire sales management. Since 2000, he has been an engineering consultant to a variety of trucking industry suppliers, and a consultant for TMC/SAE truck fuel economy testing. He also writes monthly articles in several trucking trade journals including Fleet Owner, Tire Review, and Fleet Equipment, with approximately 140 articles published to date.
