SAE 2012 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress
Technical Session Schedule
Wednesday, October 3
Blue Ribbon Panel: 24 Volt for North America
(Session Code: CV903)
Room 44/46/48/50/51 9:45 a.m.
The purpose of this panel is to explore the opportunities and barriers of moving to a 24 volt electrical system for commercial vehicles due to increasing load requirements. The automotive industry was faced with a similar challenge and evaluated the implementation of 42 volt electrical systems in the late 1990’s. The requirements for commercial vehicles are being driven by additional content on the vehicle for “creature comforts”, higher starting demands for engines and anti-idling systems. As a result, battery and alternator cables have to be increased to prevent losses in efficiency due to voltage drop and systems packaging become more of a challenge. The panel discussion will center on the technical and commercial barriers in the commercial vehicle market for a 24V electrical system and what kind of strategies can be used to implement such a system.
