A Systems Approach to Meet Future Fuel Economy and Emissions Regulations


Michael Ruth (BS, MS) has 25 years of experience in the design and development of diesel engines and sub- systems. He is a specialist in emission control systems with experience in high speed DI diesel combustion system development. In 2001 Mr. Ruth led a development team to demonstrate Tier2, Bin5 on a diesel powered light duty pick up truck. More recently, Mr. Ruth led the systems integration development team on the application of the first commercial system to meet the U.S. 2010 on-highway heavy duty vehicle emissions standards. Mr. Ruth is credited with having architected the basic control system that was applied to the 2007 Dodge Ram equipped with the Cummins 6.7L engine utilizing the NOx adsorber catalyst. Mr. Ruth is now leading Cummins effort to develop the next generation Tier2, Bin2 diesel engine while maintaining vehicle fuel efficiency 40% greater than an equivalent gasoline powered vehicle.
