Dr. Chris Atkinson is the founder of Atkinson LLC, a consultancy in the area of advanced engine technology. He holds the degrees of B.Sc. Chemical Engineering from the University of Natal, South Africa (1983), MSME from West Virginia University (1987) and Sc.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT (1991). He held the rank of tenured professor in mechanical and aerospace engineering at West Virginia University until 2012. His interests lie in the areas of advanced engine control, fuel efficiency improvements, emissions reduction, alternative fuel utilization, and hybrid electric vehicle development. He has conducted research on behalf of a number of government agencies and automotive companies, has authored 30 archival journal publications and over 80 conference presentations (with over 1000 citations), and holds one US patent. He has received awards for research and teaching from the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Atkinson LLC has performed work for a number of automotive companies, diesel engine manufacturers and Tier 1 parts suppliers, in addition to several federal and state agencies. Current and former clients include Detroit Diesel Corporation, Cummins Inc., Caterpillar Inc., Sasol, International Truck and Engine Corporation, IAV Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, Millen, DENSO R&D, Volvo AB, Mack Trucks Inc., Argonne National Laboratory, Ford Motor Company, Nissan Research and Development Inc., Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabkin, PetroSA, Halliburton Energy Services, and BAE Systems Inc. For several years Chris was a member of the advisory board of a major international engine research center, in addition to currently advising an engine start-up company.
