Formerly a subcommittee of the Motor Vehicle Council's Engine Forum Committee, the Small Engine and Powered Equipment Committee is now part of the Specialized Vehicle and Equipment Council. The committee is responsible for preparing, reviewing and updating SAE Standards, Recommended Practices and Information Reports that enhance the efficiency, safety, economy and service to mankind of small engines intended for consumer products. Engineering standards activities¿with the exception of sound measurements¿enable the design, development, application and testing of small engines. Small engines are currently (1978) defined as those meeting one or both of the following criteria: 1. .82 litre (50 cu. in.) or less in displacement and/or 2. 15.1 kw (20hp) or less in power output. The limits established above are not rigidly prescribed, since larger engines may legitimately fall within the committee scope where there is family similarity or other design characteristics in common with engines falling within the above designated limits. Recently revitalized, the committee is actively updating existing documents as well as developing the following new work items: ¿ Diesel Engines in SAE J1088 ¿ Evaporative Emissions Test Procedure ¿ Generator Set Emission Test Procedure ¿ Plastic Tank Integrity Test Procedure ¿ Constant Volume Sampling Test Procedure ¿ Small Engine Noise Measurement Test Procedure Participants in the SAE Small Engine and Powered Equipment Committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government and other interested parties.
