Temporary Methods for Assessing the Load Carrying Capacity of Aircraft Propulsion System Lubricating Oils
To present methods which, according to the consensus of the aviation propulsion community represented by SAE Committee E-34, allow the continued assessment of load carrying capacity of current chemistry products during periods of limited or nonavailability of previously used standardized methods.<p>The methods listed in this document are intended to provide a means of generating data which can be used as a guide for making decisions against the backdrop of load capacity databases (Ryder, IAE, FZG) and experiences available on chemically similar oils used for lubrication of aircraft propulsion and power drive systems.
The subject document describes two lubricating characteristic test methods that were developed as alternatives to the Ryder Gear Test Method. These two methods are now being documented in separate ARPs . The ALTE test method has become ARP6255 and the WAM High Speed Load Capacity Test Method has been designated ARP6156. Since AIR4978 is being superseded by two ARPs, we request the subject document to be placed in a stabilized status.
