Rationale There is a lack of guidance in industry regarding the use scatter factors in endurance. Practices seem to vary between OEM’s and gear manufacturers with a variety of opinions regarding the purpose and perceived benefits of applying a scatter factor to endurance testing. The goal of the tests with respect to risk mitigation and qualification vary depending on a number of variables: experience with the technology; service environment vs laboratory constraints; early wear and tear; etc. An information report would help the designer in determining the appropriate scatter factor to specify for endurance testing.
