Title
Landing Gear Systems - Endurance Scatter Factor
Scope
This information report will provide the reader with the thought processes and rationales employed by OEM's and gear manufacturers when specifying the scatter factor to apply to landing gear system components for endurance qualification testing.
Rationale
There is a lack of guidance in industry regarding the use scatter factors in endurance. Practices seem to vary between OEM’s and gear manufacturers with a variety of opinions regarding the purpose and perceived benefits of applying a scatter factor to endurance testing. The goal of the tests with respect to risk mitigation and qualification vary depending on a number of variables: experience with the technology; service environment vs laboratory constraints; early wear and tear; etc. An information report would help the designer in determining the appropriate scatter factor to specify for endurance testing.
