Title
Aircraft Tires Service Overload Capabiity
Scope
This recommended practice will define a service overload capability requirement that represents the in service threat to the tire(s) following failure of one tire on a multiple wheel landing gear based on Industry Best Practices.
Rationale
Many OEM’s impose an overload condition on the tire that exceeds the current 1.5 factor required in the TSO. The overload condition is imposed in the spirit of 25.1309 considering continued safe flight and landing following the failure of one tire. In addition to maximizing safety, economic damage is mitigated by ensuring the remaining tire(s) on a landing gear perform their intended function following the first failure. An overload requirement more severe than the TSO, in spirit of 25.1309, should be a recommended practice and that likely the TSO should be revised to reflect this minimum level of safety.
