Scope
I propose to develop a new ARP in support of non-rotating vertical balancing machines, to be titled, "Balancing Machines - Description and Evaluation, Vertical, Single-Plane Non Rotating Type." The scope of this effort will be similar to ARP 5323. except all references to test speed range and balancing speed range shall be eliminated and performance criteria shall be reviewed and possibly revised.
Rationale
Modern jet engines are more frequently employing integrally bladed rotors (IBRs) in the design of their Fan and Compressor rotor stages. Due to the inherent design nature of an integrally bladed rotor (IBR), which is fabricated from a single work piece with no removable and loosely-attached components, the requirement for a rotating speed capability is rendered unnecessary. A non-rotating, single-plane, vertical balancing machine with the appropriate sensitivity and accuracy to meet OEM unbalance tolerances can result in considerable capital investment and labor cost savings for OEM and MRO facilities.
