Minimum Performance Standard for Pitot and Pitot-Static Tubes
This standard establishes the essential minimum safe performance requirements for electrically heated pitot (total pressure) tubes and for pitot-static pressure tubes for subsonic transport aircraft. This standard covers the following basic types: Type I - Pitot pressure, straight and L-shaped, electrically heated, and Type II - Pitot and static pressures, straight and L-shaped, electrically heated.
FAA TSO-C16a refers to SAE AS 8006 for the minimum performance requirments that must be met to receive TSO authorization. EASA has harmonized ETSO-C16a with FAA TSO-C16a as the first step to improve the qualification standards for Pitot and Pitot-static probes. Comments received during the adoption of ETSO-C16a highlighted the following areas for improvement: 1) The TSO icing conditions are not sufficiently conservative. Recent testing has demonstrated that the icing test requirements of the TSO are less conservative than certain manufacturer's requirements. 2) The TSO does not require the probes to be tested in ice crystal or mixed phase icing conditions despite probes being sensitive to such icing conditions. 3) The TSO does not mention the potential installation effect from the aircraft on the probe's icing environment. 4) The TSO format is very confusing and open to misinterpretation because of the large number of exceptions and changes the TSO makes to AS8006.
