Title
Fluorocarbon Rubber (FKM), High Temperature/HTS Oil Resistant/Fuel Resistant, Low Compression Set, 70 to 80 Hardness, Low Temperature Tg -22°F (-30°C)
Scope
This specification covers a fluorocarbon (FKM) rubber in the form of O-rings, compression seals, O-ring cord, and molded-in place gaskets. Application: These products have been used typically as sealing rings, compression seals, O-ring cord, and molded-in place gaskets in contact with air and a wide variety of fuels, lubricants, and specific hydraulic fluids from -30 to +204 °C (-22 to +400°F), but usage is not limited to such applications. Each application should be considered individually. This class of fluoroelastomers is recommended for use in higher thermo-oxidative stability (HTS) gas turbine engine lubricants.
Rationale
The AMS CE committee agreed taht AMS-R-83485 should be split into two specs: AMS 3000 series and AMS 7000 series, with a new part specification added. After further discussion, it was decided to make the changes according to the editorial guidelines, maintain the technical requirements as is, add a long term compression set requirement, add a Reference Oil 300 requirement, add a glass transition value (Tg), and add a QPL. AS 3000 series and AS 7000 series part documents would replace AMS-R-83485/1. It was also agreed that this need (part documents) was beyond the charter of CE and should be stewarded by A-6C (Seals Panel).
