Title
Taxonomy and Definitions for Terms Related to On-Road Autonomous Vehicles
Scope
This Information Report describes a set of definitions relevant to on-road autonomous vehicles that will be operated on existing public roadways in mixed traffic consisting not only of other on-road autonomous vehicles, but also of driver-controlled vehicles of all classes, and including other road users, such as motorcyclists, pedal cyclists and pedestrians. As such, this paper assumes that transportation safety (i.e., the protection of all road users), as well as user convenience, are the primary goals of on-road autonomous vehicles, which in this regard differ from other types of autonomous vehicles, such as single-purpose autonomous vehicles used in closed-circuit environments (e.g., airports, factories) or autonomous vehicles not used on public roads. This document also defines categories of automation that do not constitute “autonomy.”
