Automotive Battery Recycling Identification and Cross-Contamination Prevention
Scope
This SAE Energy Storage System (ESS) Identification provides recommendations to identify energy storage systems with a maximum voltage exceeding 6V but not more than 60V. The ESS identification should be applied, to improve the safety and efficiency of dismantling, sorting and recycling operations. The identification system is intended to support the proper and efficient recycling of rechargeable battery systems used in transportation applications (including SLI batteries). Other battery systems such as non-rechargeable batteries, batteries contained in electronics, and telecom/utility batteries are not considered in the development of this specification. This does not preclude these systems from adapting the format proposed if they so choose. This document provides guidance on legacy energy storage systems as well as defining the future optimal system to eliminate cross-contamination of recycling streams.
