Guidelines for Repair Process Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Composite Bonded Structure
AIR6292
The SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is intended to be used as a process verification guide for evaluating implementation of key factors in bonded repair of fiber reinforced composite structure in a repair shop environment. The guide will be used in conjunction with a regulatory approved and substantiated repair, and is intended to promote consistency and reliability.
Rationale: Case studies demonstrate a great variance in industry bonding repair quality controls have been prepared by CACRC member airlines and have been distributed to industry training organizations to create awareness of issues that need to be addressed by the OEM, airline, repair station and regulatory community. These case studies have shown that non end item inspectable defects are sometimes being incorporated into repairs that could have negative affect on the continued reliable and safe operation of aircraft. In cases brought forth, the inadequate repair could have been avoided if standardized processes were followed that would have identified repair process failures and/or design flaws through process verification.
The document will satisfy a need for a checklist of best practices in implementation of tooling, process steps, and quality controls that help ensure process requirements are met for a previously substantiated repair design.
