Ignition Standards Committee

The Scope of the SAE Ignition Committee is to standardize dimensions and performance characteristics for components responsible for initiating combustion including spark plugs, glow plugs, ignition cable, ignition cable assemblies, distributors, coils and ignition sub-systems for all spark and compression ignition engines. Included are peripheral standards concerning spark plug installation socket tools, spark plug heat range evaluation technique and terminology. This committee interfaces actively with the counterpart ISO committee (ISO/TC22/SC1) with the goal of developing standards that will commonize component design and performance throughout the world resulting in common interfaces. This, in turn, will lead to reduced costs from increased process productivity for the component manufacturers, which will facilitate trade throughout the world. The end customers will benefit as well due to the improved product quality and reduced costs derived from global sourcing.
