Abstract:
In 1987 W. Ott originally proposed the EVent Independent Cumulative Damage (EVICD) prediction method for the crack initiation stage under arbitrary uniaxial and multiaxial stress strain histories. Because EVICD works incrementally special cycle counting methods like the Rainflow method need not to be applied. Meanwhile the third generation of the EVICD methods is being developed. The first and the second generation use the incremental plastic work as a primary damage parameter. The second generation of EVICD methods uses as a secondary parameter the normal stresses on the instantaneous plane with maximum shear or the normal stress on the octahedral plane. A special procedure has been developed to explicitly consider the tension-compression and shear contributions.

Comparisons of predictions after the second generation of the EVICD methods to actual test results showed that the predictions were already quite satisfactory.

Because the EVICD methods consider the changes at the material under the current stresses and strains explicitly both on a stronger mechanical and on a further developed physical basis load sequence effects and further influences on damage accumulation can be evaluated.
