Abstract:
Carbon/carbon aircraft braking systems experience thermal oxidation at normal operating temperatures and are protected with complex oxidation protection chemistry to prevent this phenomenon from occurring. In the aircraft- operating environment there are many catalytic materials that cause accelerated oxidation when coupled with the normal operating brake temperatures. This catalytic oxidation can rapidly affect the structural integrity of the carbon/carbon composite brakes leading to premature removal of the brake friction material. Honeywell has worked to improve the oxidation protection systems to increase effectiveness against these catalytic agents. Additionally, in a collaborative effort with runway deicer manufacturer Cryotech, a proactive approach was taken to develop a runway deicer that meets all performance criteria, and is both environmentally friendly and carbon/carbon composite friendly.
