Abstract:
China's automotive industry has expanded rapidly in recent years. The soaring vehicle growth, however, is causing serious energy supply and environmental pollution, among other problems. To reduce petroleum use and protect the environment, China has been exploring the development and use of alternative fuels. To help this effort, it is strategically important to determine the appropriate powertrain/fuel systems for China, given its unique energy situation. This article conducts an examination of the potential for alternative fuels and alternative-fuel vehicles in China. In particular, a well-to-wheels analysis is conducted to compare alternative fuels and applicable powertrain systems are compared in terms of fuel consumption, emissions, and sustainable development.
