Abstract:
Environmental control system (ECS) ducting plays an important role in a commercial aircraft enabling survival, safety and comfort to passengers. Composites, with their high specific stiffness and strength, helped in realizing light weight ducting systems. However, composites also pose many challenges to engineers in the design and development of ECS ducting systems. Diverse geometric configurations, complex loading conditions, stringent structural/fabrication/ assembly requirements, and diverse environmental and operating conditions makes the duct design quite challenging. This paper presents some of the experiences and practical aspects in meeting the challenges involved in the design and development of ECS ducts for the commercial aircraft industry.
