Abstract:
As the U.S. Department of Defense moves toward an increase utilization of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS), it is inherent to provide Ada development that drives costs down and provides a quick Time-to-Market (TTM). COTS provides an optimal balance between these two factors. Since C language is an inherent part of most COTS software, there is a need for new Ada development to use existing C-based software. The Intel386\sT EX embedded processor is an extension of the Intel386SX processor core architecture with added functionality for a number of peripheral devices such as, clock and power management, interrupt control, timer control, DMA, synchronous and asynchronous serial I/O and parallel I/O. Support for the on-chip peripheral is available in the form of C Library extensions to the iRMX\sR EMB operating system (O.S) software real-time kernel developed specifically for the Intel 386\sT EX processor. The PC environment has a number of low- cost, high-quality native development tools including several C and Ada compilers. Typical embedded systems require cross development tools including specialized compiler and runtime systems. The peripheral support for the on-chip peripheral is available in the form of C Library extensions to the iRMX\sR EMB O.S real-time kernel developed specifically for the Intel386\sT EX processor.
