Assembly Simulation for Joint Strike Fighter

Document Number: 981851

Date Published: June 1998

Author(s):
Fredrick C. Rudnick - Boeing Co.

Abstract:
Assembly simulation technology will be a key element in the design and manufacture of an affordable Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The assembly simulation software provides tools to dynamically move the parts into place within a 3-D computer environment. The result is better communication through graphically displaying the parts, the tools and the manufacturing process. Interference?s are checked within the simulation to assure proper fit of all parts and that their installation is possible with respect to surrounding and previously installed parts. This technology enables detection and correction of problems prior to part manufacture and assembly, the resulting cost and schedule savings could be enormous.
