A Climate-Change Scorecard for US Non-Commercial Driver Education

The Climate Change Scorecard evaluates eco-driving in state-sponsored non-commercial Driving License Manuals (DLMs) and the results are revealing. Despite 33 US states (66%) with extant climate change commitments, almost the same percentage (62%) of states received a “D” grade and entirely omitted to mention driver influence on fuel consumption and emissions and only five states (10%) received an “A” grade with substantive eco-driving measures in their DLMs. There is thus significant scope for eco-driving content in DLMs, which can range from the state’s communicating climate change commitments to how drivers influence fuel consumption through their driving practices, to empowering drivers with strategies they can adopt to save fuel and money and reduce emissions.

Testing Charging Stations with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Simulation Systems

In the rapidly evolving EC Ecosystem, focusing on testing charging stations is critical to ensure their reliability and functionality. HIL simulators offer a controlled and efficient environment for these tests. These simulators can replicate real-world scenarios such as various EV models, the evaluation of charging speed, various power levels, compatibility with different charging standards, and other charging parameters. Additionally, HIL simulators enable thorough testing of software components, such as user interfaces and communication protocols. This session will focus on the building blocks of a Charging HIL Simulation system that allows the simulation of the electric vehicle as well as the charging equipment on signal level and power level, offering a powerful workflow to bring electric vehicle behavior on power level to the lab.

Urban Curbside Charging

Tens of millions of Americans live in dense cities; in apartments and row homes that don't have garages or parking spots. 15 months ago, New York City launched a pilot program that brought curbside chargers to several city streets to address the problem of how EV owners who live in apartments can easily charge their EVs since they don't have their own personal garages. This session will examine this program and how the multiple agencies and organizations collaborated to get this it off the ground.

Tennessee Corridor Fast Charging Network

In 2021 the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Office of Energy Programs [TDEC OEP]) announced a partnership to develop a statewide EV fast-charging network to power the growth of EVs across Tennessee and reduce barriers to transportation electrification. Specifically, the two have signed an agreement to collaborate and fund a network of fast-charging stations every 50 miles along Tennessee’s interstates and major highways. This initiative will add approximately 50 new charging locations, tripling the existing fast-charging network. For reference, as of February 2021, there were only 24 fast-charging locations operating in Tennessee that were open to all consumers and supported both charging standards common to EVs.

The North America Charging (Tesla) Standard

After years of different EVs needing different chargers, it was announced that the North American Charging Standard (NACS), currently being standardized as SAE J3400 and also known as ‘the Tesla charging standard’, has been opened for use to other manufacturers.
