Government/Industry Meeting

January 28-30, 2025 | Washington, D.C.

Pre-Event: NHTSA/SAE CyberSecurity Workshop

Tuesday, January 28 | 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.

12:15 – 1:00 p.m. | Keynote: Karl Heimer, Heimer and Associates

“State of the Union in Automotive Cybersecurity (Are we safer than we were 10 years ago?)”

1:00 – 2:00 p.m. | Panel Discussion: EV Charging Cybersecurity: The Equipment, the Car and the Infrastructure

Scope: Electric Vehicles are projected to be the fastest growing vehicle segment in the next two decades. The EV Charging sector is truly unique because charging infrastructure sits between two massive industries with unique use cases: Mobility and Energy. Connectivity needs go beyond the EV-Charger connection. The sector is poised to rapidly evolve to achieve ubiquitous, interoperable charging and to engage unique use cases beyond EV charging- charging network roaming, bi-directional power transfer, payment, and others. Underpinning all the sector’s goals is the massive connectivity the space requires and the drive to find a reliable, interoperable charging across dozens of EV manufacturers and charging providers. Connected to electric grids behind the EV Chargers. This complexity creates numerous cybersecurity issues that must be met. This panel will explore EV Charging cybersecurity issues from many vectors across private, public and government Sectors in Mobility and Energy.

2:00 – 3:00 p.m. | Panel Discussion: Aftermarket Devices in Heavy Trucks

Unintended interactions between aftermarket devices and vehicle computing systems may result in serious cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Recent research has shown that aftermarket devices in heavy trucks may be wirelessly vulnerable as well as capable of disrupting vehicle control. This panel should address questions such as:

  • How should aftermarket devices be integrated into heavy trucks?
  • What mitigations exist for manufacturers to limit aftermarket device access to control systems in heavy trucks?
  • What cybersecurity responsibilities do aftermarket device manufacturers have?
  • What regulatory guidance exists for designing security aftermarket devices?

Registration for this workshop is free. Pre-registration is required.

SAE, AVE, USCAR, CCI Workshop

January 28 I 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The Decarbonization of Mobility; Lessons, Timing, Goals, and Future Pathways
How do we maximize our environmental gains today?

Join us for this special event, to have an open dialogue with industry and policy leaders to understand the "reality" of transport decarbonization.

The last decade has seen an unprecedented amount of investment in clean mobility technology. Vehicle and fuel technologies continue to advance and have the potential to reduce GHG emissions significantly. A recent publication by Argonne National Laboratory shows that all powertrain technologies considered – conventional internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrids, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – can reduce GHG emissions by ~ 85% in the future when paired with low carbon fuels and renewable electricity. Given the plethora of available cost-effective technologies:

  • How can we maximize environmental gains across the transportation sector?
  • How can policy makers better incentivize environmental gains in the near-term along with new technology investments?

Workshop open to all Government/Industry registrants. No pre-registration required.

AVSC Best Practice Workshop

January 28 I 1:30-3:00 p.m.

AVSC overview, SAE Office of Automation overview, and the role of ‘best practices’ in the lifecycle of industry standardization.

Presentations will include high-level view of topic selection and development and how content is introduced into open industry standards development processes.
Presenter: Edward Straub, SAE-I

AVSC Member Panel Discussion
This will be a discussion between the moderator and AVSC member companies’ utilization of Best Practices and their experiences during the development process.
Moderator: Darcyne Foldenauer, Director SAE’s AVSC

Interactive Workshop
Participants discuss new or updates needed for existing standards, why they believe they’re needed, and how they would support an ADS Safety Case. Ideas and notes will be captured in real-time so they can be explored in detail, including where/how the topic might fit in the lifecycle of industry best practices and standards, leading to regulation. The output from the workshop will be a DRAFT list of topics, their relationships, and timing/place in the lifecycle for review by SAE International/SAE-ITC.
Facilitator: Darcyne Foldenauer, Director SAE’s AVSC

Workshop open to all Government/Industry registrants. No pre-registration required.

Our technical program is being developed by engineering professionals from around the world. Session topics, dates and times may shift. Please return soon for updates as program details become available.
