Tuesday Keynote

Denise Gray

President, LG Chem Michigan Inc. Tech Center

Denise Gray is President LG Chem Michigan Inc. Tech Center. (LGCMI TC), the North American subsidiary of lithium-ion battery maker, LG Chem (LGC), Korea. In this position, she has overall responsibility for strategic direction, engineering, and business development. Additionally, she is a member of LGCMI Board of Directors.

Prior to joining LG Chem, Gray served as Vice President of Electrification Powertrain Engineering at AVL List, GmbH, in Austria, where she was responsible for leveraging AVL’s global capability to provide electrification engineering services to the automotive industry. Prior to that, Gray was Vice President of Business Development for an electrified powertrain battery startup company in California targeting China’s New Energy Vehicle Market. The majority of her over 30-year professional career was spent at General Motors, where she spearheaded efforts in vehicle electrical, powertrain controls systems and software, including battery systems.

Gray has been a proponent of the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and is a frequent participant at STEM events. Her strong support of the STEM curriculum has played a role in her appointment to Kettering University’s College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council.

Gray received a Master of Science in Engineering Management of Technology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Kettering University.

Wednesday Keynote

Toshifumi Takaoka

Project General Manager, Advanced Powertrain Development & Strategic Planning Dept., Toyota Motor Corporation

Toshifumi Takaoka is a Project General Manager with Toyota Motor Corporation, Advanced Powertrain Development & Strategic Planning Department.

His background is an engine and hybrid system development for HEV and PHEV including engine development of 1st generation Prius, project general manager of 3rd gen. HEV and PHEV Prius.

Currently his responsibility is a R&D of all electrified vehicle.

Thursday Keynote

Peter Savagian

Senior VP, Engineering, Ampaire, Inc.

Keynote Presentation: Automotive Analogues in the Electrification of Aviation

Peter Savagian is Senior VP of Engineering at Ampaire, Inc., an electric aircraft startup company. He joined Ampaire in early 2019 and there he directs design, development, and certification of electric propulsions systems and their integration into short haul fixed-wing aircraft.

Prior to this, Pete has had a long tenure in the electric vehicle business. From 2016 through 2018, Pete served as a Senior VP of engineering at Faraday Future, a large scale EV startup company. Previously, he was General Motors where he was General Director in charge of electrified vehicle propulsion systems. His accomplishments there span a period of 13 electrified vehicles, from the 1996 GM EV1, through the 2017 Chevy Bolt.

Pete also currently serves on the Board of Directors of Electra Meccanica Vehicles, and as an advisor to Sibros Technologies. He is affiliated as a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin, and serves on the industrial advisory board of WEMPEC. He holds 44 patents and has authored 17 technical publications in the field of electrification. Pete has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, an MS in Operations Research Engineering from the University of Southern California, and an MBA from Duke University.
