The presentation Without the Past There is no Future will cover some aspects of NVH work done in the automotive sound package area over the last 50 years or so, ending in with a look to the future evolution of NVH from the presenter’s perspective.

Biography:
Dr. Pranab Saha, PE, is an entrepreneur, co-founder and a Principal Consultant of Kolano and Saha Engineers, Inc., an independent professional engineering and consulting company in acoustics, noise, and vibration.  A well-known authority on automotive noise, body interior systems, and sound package materials, Dr. Saha has directed and participated nationally and internationally in numerous advanced noise control engineering programs and training seminars for various OEM companies and their suppliers worldwide. Dr. Saha is a member of SAE International, ASA, ASME, ESD, INCE-USA, and NSPE/MSPE. At SAE, he is the past Chair of the SAE Engineering Meetings Board (EMB), Technical Quality Response Team chartered within EMB, SAE Noise and Vibration Conference, SAE Acoustical Materials Committee, and past contributing editor of Sound and Vibration magazine. He served on the Executive Nomination Committee and on the Fellows Committee. He led the development of the SAE document “How to Write an SAE Technical Paper,” and has helped develop several SAE standards in acoustics.  He is a Professional Development Instructor, Lead Faculty Member of the SAE Vehicle Interior Noise Academy, and is currently serving as an associate editor for SAE International Journal of Vehicle Dynamics, Stability, and NVH. He has presented technical papers and has organized and chaired numerous technical sessions sponsored by SAE and other professional organizations. He has been honored with the Forest R. McFarland award twice and technical Standards Board certification of appreciation.  He has also won several awards presented the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE), and the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD). He is a Board Certified Member and a Director of Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE-USA), a Fellow Member of SAE International and ESD, and has been named an SAE Master Instructor. Dr. Saha holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Acoustics Specialty) from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Presentation Abstract:
We spend most of our quality listening time either at home or in a car. Unlike a concert hall -- where we spend the least amount of time listening, and on which there has been more than a century of research done -- there has very little research done for the home, and even less for the car. And this is why we put so much effort into the science of sound in homes and even more so into the science of sound in cars. Mr. Shively will explore the evolving path to becoming an audio engineer or an NVH engineer: the acoustic path. And, he will address the question of why sound quality does really matter, and the overlapping engineering disciplines which pursue sound quality. He will discuss how the audio systems are expanding to integrate Active Noise Control (ANC), Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), and Acoustic Vehicle Alert Systems (AVAS) for quiet car sound design and autonomous driver alerts in the pursuit of sound quality and how that is achieved. He will review the classical challenges of acoustics in a car and the new challenges for OEM audio system design and how they are being met. And, finally, he will touch on the evolution of expectations in automotive audio in existing markets and, more critically, emerging markets.

Biography:
Roger is a Co-founder and Principal of JJR Acoustics. He has over 34 years of experience in engineering research and development, with significant experience in product realization and in launching new products at OEM manufacturers around the world.

Before co-founding JJR Acoustics in 2011, Roger worked as Chief Engineer of Acoustic Systems as well as functional manager for North American and Asian engineering product development teams in the Automotive Division of Harman International Industries Inc; a journey that began in 1986.

Roger received his degree in Acoustical Engineering from Purdue University in 1983, and finished post-graduate work in the field of finite element analysis. He is a member of the Audio Engineering Society, Acoustical Society of America, and Society of Automotive Engineering. He has published numerous research papers and articles in the areas of transducers, automotive audio, psychoacoustics, and computer modeling. Roger also holds U.S. and International Patents related to the design of advanced acoustic systems and applications particularly in the field of automotive audio.

Presentation Abstract:

Biography:
Dr. Perry Gu is NVH Executive Chief Engineer of Geely Automobile Research Institute. He is leading the Vehicle Engineering Center of the Institute responsible for Vehicle Safety, CAE, Vehicle NVH, Vehicle Dynamics，Vehicle Attribute Integration, and Environmental Protection Operation and Vehicle Lightweight Technology.  Dr. Gu received his Bachelor and Master Degrees from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and his Ph.D from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He had worked at Ford Motor Company, United Technologies Corporation, Tesla Motors, and Fisker Automotive Company.  He joined Geely Automobile Research Institute in July, 2013. He is an expert in Vehicle NVH, Computer Aided Engineering, Mechanical Dynamics and vehicle attribute development. He is a member of SAE and ASME.
