Prof. Stefan Pischinger

President & CEO, FEV Group GmbH

Presentation: Future Perspective of the Internal Combustion Engine

Professor Stefan Pischinger studied Mechanical Engineering at Aachen Technical University. From 1985 until 1989 he worked as a research assistant at the Sloan Automotive Laboratory at M.I.T. until he received his PhD for his work on Spark Ignition in modern combustion engines. From 1989 until 1997 he was in various positions at Daimler-Benz (today: Daimler) working on Diesel and Gasoline engine development. In his last position he was department leader advanced engineering Diesel engines and Project leader for the new Common Rail V8-Diesel engine. Since 1997 he is Professor at Aachen Technical University and Director of the Institute for Combustion Engines. At the same time he is President and Chief Executive Officer of the FEV Group, a worldwide leading Company for Engineering Services and Test Systems in the field of Combustion Engines and Powertrain. Since 2010 he is member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Arts.

Piotr Szymański

Director for Energy, Transport & Climate, European Commission Joint Research Centre

Piotr Szymański hails from Warsaw, Poland. He studied physics at Warsaw University and went on to complete a PhD in experimental particle physics at the Institute for Nuclear Studies in Świerk, Poland. He worked as a Research Associate at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK and the J-W Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany before going on to be a Staff Member at the European Organization for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. He holds a habilitation in physics and is the author or co-author of more than 200 scientific papers in various fields of particle physics. He was Head of the Department for Interdisciplinary Applications of Physics at the Institute for Nuclear Studies in Świerk, Poland. In 2009 he took up the position of Director of Euratom Safeguards at the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission in Luxembourg. Since 2016 he leads the European Commission's Joint Research Centre Directorate for Energy, Transport and Climate which brings together about 350 scientific staff based in Petten (NL), Ispra (IT), Seville (ES) and Brussels (B).

Education: Ph.D. in Surface physic, Chalmers University.

Experience: 25 year of experience of strategic development on energy conversion, propulsion technology at Volvo Car Corporation and within the Volvo Group.

Current work:  Director Technology Exploration and Strategy, at Powertrain Engineering, within Volvo Group Truck Technology, and also Technology Advisor in High Efficient Diesel Engine technologies, on Group level.
