DEI Chats: Anmol Sharma Reflects on his involvement with SAE International for AAPI Month
Posted: May 27, 2022
Anmol Sharma has faced challenges and experienced triumphs as he entered the world of engineering—and he credits SAE International for opening these opportunities to him.
Sharma started his journey with SAE in 2014 during his freshman year at Manipal University Jaipur when he joined SAE-India. At the time, Manipal University Jaipur had over 300 student members and was one of the biggest chapters in the North Indian section. His involvement with the chapter allowed him to receive mentorship from SAE professional members in the mobility industry and learn from their work.
It’s an experience that has taken into account multiple cultures to provide an inclusive atmosphere. With the diverse perspectives—including his own—Sharma found SAE’s chapter’s across the world created an ideal place to grow.
“After all these years of working with SAE in different capacities and in different regions, this esteemed organization has transformed me into a better professional and has taught me the fundamentals of work ethics and leadership that will forever be the 'foundation' of my career,” Sharma said.
Throughout his undergraduate years, Sharma held several positions within his SAE chapter. During his junior year, Sharma was elected president of the university’s inaugural Formula SAE team and participated in Formula Bharat in 2017.
Following his graduation from Manipal University Jaipur, he went on to pursue his master’s in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. There, Sharma connected with Timothy Hicks, president of SAE Chicago section, and was invited to attend the sections meetings.
Today, Sharma is a member of the Chicago section board as a student engagement and young professional officer. He acts as the liaison between the SAE Chicago section and the Chicago student community.
For students across the globe looking to follow in his footsteps, Sharma has a few words of advice.
“Seek guidance and mentorship from a pool of eminent SAE professionals and learn from their experiences,” he said. “As a student, it’s important to design and build prototypes; target one of SAE’s global platforms and present your ideas to the world!”
SAE International is filled with opportunities for everyone. Check out how you can get involved and make an impact with SAE today.
