Project Management and Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) are two critical techniques used in product development in the mobility industry today and those entering the Mobility workforce, such as Automotive Engineers, will need to be familiar not only with the terminology of this industry but will also need to be ready to apply these techniques effectively.

This Academy will bring these techniques together in an easy to understand format that goes beyond the typical concept of learning the generic theory of project planning, by exploring not only the AIAG APQP process, but also key aspects of PM processes which are in use in the Mobility Industry. Students will gain a solid foundation in the essential principles of Project Management and APQP.

The course is built upon a foundation of learning concepts followed by immediate application of learned skills by taking a sample project through all phases of a Project Plan using actual documents and formats used in the Mobility Industry today. The structure is 45 minutes - 1 hour of learning concepts which are grouped by modules to be followed by an activity based session of 45 minutes - 1 hour practical exercise. All activities will be conducted in a team based format with group leadership rotation so that all group members have an opportunity to experience the challenges of team leadership.

Realistic issues, problems and time constraints are introduced throughout the exercise to stimulate actual project concerns. Each workshop exercise uses documents specific to the particular areas of study such as Scope Planning, Timeline development and reacting to changing situations such as time crash, and conduct of Design Reviews.

Participants will have taken the four-session Economic, Financial and Production Costing Webex Module by this time. This will add to the PM scope and require each time to analyze the business case of their final design to aid in the decision to proceed with the design. A positive business case calculation would show a positive financial return to the design. Accounting data will be provided for the ECM that will permit the business case calculation.

The activities are time constrained so that students must operate in teams which allow students to see firsthand the effects of improper delegation poor follow-up of work assignments. After each exercise the instructor will conduct a feedback session with each team to review the Things Gone Right and Things Gone Wrong.

Additionally each exercise is meant to build on the previous exercise so that the team is working towards a final objective. The culmination of the seminar is a final summation presentation by each team of their project plan.

It is requested that students bring a laptop since all of the exercises are available electronically and all presentations by the students will be presented via PowerPoint.

Learning Objectives
Although you will be taking three distinct courses, they will be connected to one another through an emphasis on hands-on, project-based experience designed to expose you to real-world issues and concerns you may encounter as a practicing engineer. The courses will culminate in Angelo Mago's Project Management and Advanced Product Quality Planning course (APQP).
Our project-based approach will require participants to come to the courses prepared to design a simple vehicle part. For automobiles, please familiarize yourself with one of the following parts:
  • cam cover
  • engine bracket
  • engine piston
  • exterior body panel
  • interior door handle
  • oil pan

For aerospace vehicles, consider designing a part in a quadcopter:
  • quadcopter landing strut
  • quadcopter motor mount
  • quadcopter frame

There are three courses covering key topics engineers need to understand to succeed.

  • Principles of Cost and Finance for Engineers

    This course introduces students to the cost, finance and economic concepts that are critical to success for engineers in any kind of organization.

  • Fundamentals of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
    This course gives students a firm working knowledge of the symbols used in designs across a spectrum of engineering areas, that communicate a design from intent to manufacturing and inspection.

  • Engineering Project Management

Students will gain a solid understanding of project management and advanced quality product management in an easy to understand format that goes beyond constructing timelines and project planning.

At the end of the two-day project management course, you will be asked to create a design matrix spreadsheet (a sample design matrix will be provided) that proposes how your part will be designed, funded and built, based upon what you learn.

This is a competition. Cash prizes will be given for the best design matrixes as follows:

    a. $750 for first place;
    b. $500 for second place;
    c. $250 for third place.

All participants who successfully complete the course will receive an SAE certification in the three course areas. You will also be asked to provide feedback on the course.

Angelo Mago, James Masiak

Angelo Mago is senior consultant and owner of ATM Consulting, Inc., which provides customized training and consulting services to a varied design and manufacturing supplier community in the areas of Project Management, Design to Cost, Quality Assurance, Document Management, Supplier Development and Management, and Customer Management. He has over 25 years of experience in product design, quality assurance, and project management working in both the Governmental and Commercial mobility industry. DOD experience includes serving in the US Army TACOM Program Office in the M1 Abrams and Bradley Program Management offices and Plant Manager for the Depot Repair Facility in Mannheim Germany. Commercially Mr. Mago has worked as the Senior Supplier Quality Engineer for GM Truck Group responsible for NAO and off-shore supplier ISO qualification, Product Development, and PPAP qualification and approval. Through ATM Consulting, Mr. Mago has played a lead role in deploying a PM and APQP environment for both large and small companies. He is a recipient of the SAE Forest R. McFarland Award for distinction in professional development/education. He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology.

James Masiak has more than 32 years of experience in product and process development and implementation of business processes for General Motors. Activities include the implementation of an enhanced engineering product cost management process within GM North America, the alignment of cross-functional organizational initiatives, and development of an engineering resource allocation plan for GM Regions. Mr. Masiak was also responsible for the development and implementation of Global Engineering and Business Strategies across General Motors International Operations. His initial assignments at GM included vehicle and component testing & analyses, product development & management and strategic planning and benchmarking. He has recently applied the Innovation Corps Business Model Canvas methodology in assisting college and private sector startups. Mr. Masiak received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Wayne State University, his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his M.B.A. from the Michigan State University Executive Management Program.
