The Principles and Applications of Powertrain Controls for the New Energy Vehicles C1638

Topics: Powertrain & Propulsion

Powertrain controls for NEVs are one of the most complex and highly confidential areas of NEV research and development.  This two-day course takes the seemingly complicated field of NEV powertrain controls and summarizes it into a few basic principles.  The latest and most popular NEV powertrains are also reviewed to illustrate these principles and the controls strategies used.

Learning Objectives

By attending this course, you will be able to identify or explain:

  • The major NEV powertrain architectures and their characteristics
  • The functions and limitations of different kinds of NEV powertrain
  • The energy flow of each power source
  • Different ways of improving existing powertrain system, with trade-off among performance, economy, cost, and degree of complexity
  • A systematic approach for coordinating the vehicle and powertrain components

Yunfei Luan

Yunfei Luan is a graduate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a degree in Thermal Engineering and holds a PhD degree in Mechanics from Wayne State University, Detroit, USA. Since 2008, he has gained experience working at General Motors and British Aerospace during which he was deeply involved in engine combustion, hybrid power system control strategy, energy optimization and transmission control. He also played a key role in the development of several mass production hybrid vehicles. In 2006, he received the CEO Award from General Motors for his contribution to the development of General Motors’ Saturn Vue hybrid vehicle. After returning to China in 2010, he has worked as the chief expert in Changan New Energy Automobile Co. Ltd and the chief engineer of hybrid powertrain platform in Shanghai E-Propulsion Auto Technology Co. Ltd. He has led the development of several mass production NEVs including Changan EADO EV, Roewe RX5 PHEV SUV and Roewe i6 PHEV. Currently, he works for Faraday Future where he serves as a senior director. In this position, he is responsible for presiding over R&D of the overall control and integration of high-end smart interconnected EV. He has published 4 SAE papers in America as the lead author and holds a number of American and Chinese patents of invention. He is one of the main authors of, The Principles and Applications of Powertrain Controls for the New Energy Vehicles, a book published in January 2013.
