FINEMET by Hitachi Metals is claimed to be the first nanocrystalline soft magnetic material to be developed. The material, which will be displayed at the SAE 2014 World Congress April 8-10 in Detroit, has high saturation flux density, high permeability, and stable temperature characteristics. It provides good electromagnetic noise suppression performance and contributes to energy savings. The material allows reduction in size and weight of electric and electronics devices. FINEMET toroid cores are tape-wound and used widely in common mode choke (CMC) applications because of the key characteristics of high permeability up to 100 kHz, low coercive force, saturation flux density up to 1.23 Tesla, and core loss as low as 250 kW/m³. Applications include hybrid-electric vehicles, electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles. FINEMET is commonly used for EMI noise reduction EMC filters as well as in high-frequency transformers in power conversion applications. (Booth 929)
