Doosan has added the Tier 4-compliant DL220-5 with a 3-yd³ (2.3-m³) bucket capacity to its wheel loader lineup. The 160-hp (119-kW) DL220-5 replaces the DL220-3 model.
Doosan DL220-5 wheel loaders are driven by a fully automatic powershift transmission with three selectable transmission modes that adjust the loader’s performance to the application. Economy (Eco) reduces fuel consumption for low-demand applications; Normal balances fuel consumption for everyday digging, grading, and lifting tasks; and Power offers additional performance for heavy-duty conditions and truck-loading tasks. The vehicle control unit (VCU) keeps the engine’s computer and transmission control system in constant contact to balance fuel consumption and performance.
Falling in the 150- to 175-hp (112- to 130-kW) size class, the DL220-5 is powered by a Doosan DL06 diesel engine without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The compact wheel loader is suitable for a range of applications, such as commercial building, residential site development, road construction and maintenance, land improvement and water control, crop and livestock production, snow removal, and scrap handling.
Similar to its predecessor, the DL220-5 is manufactured with a standard Z-bar lift-arm linkage, making it suitable for scooping, loading, carrying, and general construction tasks. The DL220-5 is also available, for the first time in this model, with a new high-lift Z-bar configuration that extends the dump height by 18 in (457 mm) compared to the standard DL220-5—from 111 in (2820 mm) to 129 in (3277 mm).
This additional capability makes the configuration suitable for loading material into high-sided trucks or high hoppers, building stockpiles, or handling solid waste.
Operating weight is 27,381 lb (12,420 kg) for the standard wheel loader, compared to 28,296 lb (12,835 kg) for the high-lift option. Breakout force is listed as 22,706 lbf (10,299 kgf) standard, and 25,180 lbf (11,421 kgf) for high-lift.
Cab enhancements for the DL220-5 wheel loaders include an adjustable steering column that provides more legroom and floor space. A new fuel-consumption gauge informs operators of how much fuel the wheel loader is using in real time. The dashboard keypad was updated to make it easier for operators to push buttons, review and adjust settings, and clean and maintain the keypads.
Doosan continues to offer its forward-neutral-reverse (FNR) joystick control / gear selector as standard equipment. The operator can switch between forward, neutral, and reverse without removing his or her hand from the controls, by pressing the joystick buttons.
Ease-of-maintenance updates from the DL220-3 to the DL220-5 include additional oil sampling ports to improve preventive maintenance procedures. Various fluid pressures are now viewable from the dash panel, allowing monitoring from the cab.
An adjustable auto-shutdown feature in DL220-5 wheel loaders helps to save fuel during non-working conditions. Operators can configure the idle time before auto shutdown, from 3 to 60 minutes. When enabled, the feature will shut down the wheel loader’s diesel engine when the preset idle time is met.
With standard limited-slip differentials, the DL220-5 wheel loader has more traction when digging, grading, or loading trucks. To maneuver in tough terrain and difficult conditions, the limited-slip differential allows the wheel with the most traction to receive the proper torque to maintain operation.
Options available for the DL220-5 include: 110-V plug block heater, an emergency steering kit, hydraulic coupler for attachment changes, hydraulic locking front and conventional rear differential, a load isolation system (aka ride control) that isolates the movement of a loaded bucket from the machine, and a rearview camera.
