Cleveland Metropolitan School District Elementary Students Compete in SAE International’s Straw Rockets AWIM Programs
More than 800 elementary students from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District have been participating in a two-week program using SAE International’s A World In Motion® Straw Rockets Challenge, gaining hands-on engineering experience. On Thursday, March 21 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., winning teams will attend the 2019 Cleveland Metropolitan School District Competition at the East Professional Center Gymnasium: 1349 East 79th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44103. Approximately 150 students, in teams of four, will compete in both distance and accuracy competitions.
Made possible through a grant by the Arconic Foundation, the students began the program in January. In the Straw Rockets Challenge, students build, test and modify rockets made from drinking straws. By changing one variable at a time, including the rockets’ shape, size and components, students employ problem-solving skills to design rockets that meet specific goals.
The A World In Motion program brings STEM education to life through hands-on activities for students in grades K-8. Each AWIM activity incorporates a curriculum built around the "Engineering Design Experience," and requires students to work in teams to solve a “challenge” to design, build and test a product. In addition, an industry volunteer works in the classroom to assist teachers with AWIM content delivery and serve as a role model, community liaison and professional resource.
