Updated Guide Better Supports Evolving Changes in ADS
WARRENDALE, Pa. (September 26, 2019) – In continuing efforts to establish standardized groundwork for the automated vehicle technology, SAE International has released SAE J3018™ Information Report: Guidelines for Safe On-Road Testing of SAE Level 3, 4 and 5 Prototype Automated Driving Systems (ADS).
“SAE International leads standardizing activities for the rapidly advancing automation technology. These activities not only require development of new standards but also timely revisions of the existing ones,” said Jack Pokrzywa, Director of Global Ground Vehicle Standards at SAE International. “The updated J3018 standard will better reflect the needs for safe on-road performance testing of the technology today and into the future.”
The J3018 document provides general safety-relevant guidance for testing prototypes— conditional, high and full (SAE Levels 3 to 5) ADS-equipped—on test vehicles operated in mixed-traffic environments on public roads. J3018 specifically addresses testing of ADS-operated vehicles as overseen by in-vehicle fallback test drivers (IFTD) and does not include guidance for evaluating the performance of post-production ADS-equipped vehicles.
Originally published in 2015, the updated J3018 standard incorporates lessons-learned based on accumulated field experience in testing prototype ADS-operated vehicles on public roads and is now compatible with related SAE International documents.
