Arconic Foundation Awards $30,000 to SAE International’s A World In Motion STEM Program

Arconic Foundation Awards $30,000 to SAE International’s A World In Motion STEM Program

Grant Directly Supports Cleveland, Ohio, Students with Classroom Programming

WARRENDALE, Pa. (November 27, 2019) – The Arconic Foundation awarded $30,000 to the SAE Foundation in support of SAE International’s A World In Motion® (AWIM) program. The Arconic Foundation’s grant directly impacts more than 650 students in the Cleveland (Ohio) Metropolitan School District with hands-on, classroom-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programming, training for teachers and access to Arconic employees as classroom volunteers.

The project-based STEM programming afforded through the grant aligns with educational standards and explores STEM, teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills. This funding also provides for a culminating competition, giving students the chance to compete against peers using the skills they learned in their classroom experiences.

“The Arconic Foundation has long supported our mission to increase student achievement and participation in STEM,” said Lori Gatmaitan, director of the SAE Foundation. “Through their generous financial and volunteer support, we can collaborate to make an impact on students’ lives and develop a STEM-fluent talent pipeline in Cleveland.”

SAE International’s AWIM program provides more than 100,000 students annually with the skills needed to succeed in real-world work environments and helps connect their classroom learning with real-life application. During the program, students engage in the Engineering Design Experience, which includes setting goals, building knowledge, designing, building, testing and presenting their findings to an audience of peers and/or teachers. AWIM also supports professional development opportunities for teachers through training to effectively teach the curriculum, supplying all program materials and supplies to each participating classroom, and offering a STEM industry volunteer to support each teacher’s lessons.

“Every year, Arconic volunteers connect hundreds of students to the power of motion by building straw rockets or jet-powered cars in the classroom. The students readily absorb lessons about using the scientific method to solve problems and develop the best design solution to safely propel the vehicle farther, faster and on course,” said volunteer leader Eric Simeonoglou, Arconic program launch manager engineer, Cleveland, Ohio. “AWIM is a perfect complement to the classroom lessons expertly taught by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s teaching team.”
