DLR and Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH Join The International Alliance for Mobility Testing & Standardization

New Members Add to an International Portfolio of Smart Mobility Testbeds for the Standardization and Certification of Advanced Mobility Systems and Services

WARRENDALE, Pa. (January 12, 2021) The International Alliance for Mobility Testing and Standardization (IAMTS) today announced the addition of two highly experienced institutes – DLR and Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH. DLR will join the alliance as a core member while Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH will be an academic partner.

“IAMTS has again added two highly experienced organizations to our international team with the additions of DLR and Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH,” said Peter Doty, secretariat for IAMTS. “Each organization brings decades of experience, as well as a network of partners of their own. We’re excited to include their input to our ongoing projects on autonomous vehicle testing.”

DLR – the German Aerospace Center
DLR is the Federal Republic of Germany’s research center for aeronautics and space. It conducts research and development activities in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security and digitalization. The DLR Space Administration plans and implements the national space program on behalf of the federal government. Two DLR project management agencies oversee funding programs and support knowledge transfer. DLR uses the expertise of its 54 research institutes and facilities to develop solutions to climate, mobility and technology. The organization’s 9,000 employees share a mission: To explore Earth and space and develop technologies for a sustainable future. In doing so, DLR contributes to strengthening Germany’s position as a prime location for research and industry.
“A central aspect of our research is the simulation and testing for connected and automated driving. We operate one of the largest test beds on public roads in Germany. We are convinced that both topics, testing and simulation, need clear and reasonable standards, especially for data exchange and the efficient use of available test capacities,” said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Katharina Seifert, head of institute of transportation systems at DLR. “At the international level, IAMTS offered the best platform to discuss and establish the necessary standards. We are looking forward to contributing to the IAMTS goals with our experience and findings.”

Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH
Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH is Europe’s largest R&D center for virtual vehicle technology with more than 300 researchers. Research priority is the linking of numerical simulations and hardware testing, which leads to a powerful hardware-software whole system design and automation of testing and validation procedures.  

“Along with our comprehensive virtual and real testing environment for sensors, automated driving functions and digital road infrastructures, we are pleased to join the IAMTS to share our experience and strengthen the international collaboration in the field of autonomous vehicle testing,” said Prof. Daniel Watzenig, head of the electrics/electronics and software department at Virtual Vehicle and professor at Graz University of Technology.
