Mission Autono is the First in a Series Designed to Increase Equitable Access to Emerging Technologies
WARRENDALE, Pa. (Jan. 18, 2023) – Building upon its success in developing state-of-the-art student engineering education programs, SAE International is proud to launch its latest challenge, Mission Autono®. Mission Autono (https://www.sae.org/attend/student-events/mission-autono) is the first in a new series of university programs that are designed to tackle our partners’ workforce crisis by linking them to their next generation workforce in an accelerated learning community where mission-critical knowledge and practice converge. Mission Autono challenges university and high school teams to develop software seeking SAE J3016 - Level 3 Autonomy status through a one-year enhanced learning opportunity. In addition to traditional AV technology, like path planning and object detection, participants will explore complex social issues surrounding autonomous technology.
For more than 40 years, SAE has provided un-paralleled pre-professional education to students around the world and have identified key success factors, including:
-
Next-Level Programming. Working seamlessly with our industry and educational partners, we are committed to delivering next-level programming focused on emerging technologies in mobility.
-
Workforce Development. As the world’s largest mobility engineering community spanning automotive, commercial vehicle, and aerospace—we possess industry-driven insights into 21st century workforce skills.
-
Success Multipliers. Based on SAE’s extensive experience managing student programs globally, we have identified Success Multipliers, like mentorship and technical workshops, that establish the foundation for every educational offering.
SAE is currently engaging with select industry stakeholders and partners to shape this innovative new program. Mission Autono was designed with the intention of expanding SAE’s community in Pennsylvania very close to its headquarters in Warrendale, Pa. With the focus on unmanned and autonomous driving skills development, the city of Pittsburgh provides crucial opportunities to cultivate a true community of practice in the area.
“Mission Autono is truly an opportunity to create workforce development and build connections through academia, industry, and government while providing an exciting hands-on program for future mobility professionals,” said Allison Hostetler, Director of Community Programs, SAE International.
