WARRENDALE, Pa. (April 19, 2023) – SAE International announced the 2023 SAE International Award recipients at a ceremony held during SAE’s WCX-World Congress Experience in Detroit, Mich. The SAE International Awards, sponsored by J.D. Power, honor innovators, leaders, industry trendsetters, educators and students who have demonstrated excellence and have significant achievements in virtually every aspect of the mobility industry including innovation, technology advancement and education.
The SAE Medal of Honor is a highly prestigious award that pays tribute to an SAE member’s unique and significant contributions, which have strengthened SAE’s ability to further its mission and have proven to be a major factor in the organization’s success. The 2023 recipient of the SAE’s Medal of Honor is Robert Wagner, Ph.D., Division Director, Buildings and Transportation Science, Energy Science and Technology Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Dr. Wagner has founded, organized, or chaired more than 20 SAE International symposiums, panels, and conferences. Within the transportation community, Dr. Wagner is known as a futurist for his ability to anticipate and predict emerging trends. This has enabled him to identify topics of increasing importance and develop symposiums at critical times and in strategic locations. He has consistently been at the forefront of emerging trends and worked to ensure that SAE International is leading the global conversation on critical mobility challenges and opportunities.
In addition, J.D. Power awarded their coveted Excellence in Engineering Awards.

“The Excellence in Engineering awards celebrate the challenges engineers face,” said Kristin Kolodge, vice president of auto benchmarking and mobility development at J.D. Power. “Engineers must listen and understand the voice of the customer throughout the process of designing a new vehicle, whether it is all-new or redesigned, and then execute with high quality standards. The awards are based on feedback directly from customers, the ultimate judge.”
Also spotlighted at the ceremony were leaders of industry and academia, as well as student leaders, innovators and humanitarians who have made an indelible mark within their respective fields, institutions, communities and even globally in some instances. In all, nearly 90 individuals were recognized during the 2023 awards ceremony.
