European AAM leader Lilium Provides New Member for SAE International’s® Aerospace Council, Joins Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney

Lilium Has Become the First Dedicated Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Company to Provide a Member to Serve on the SAE Aerospace Council

WARRENDALE, Pa. (July 18, 2023) – Following the Paris Air Show 2023 at Le Bourget with a major focus on sustainability and new entrants in aviation, Lilium has become the first dedicated Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company to provide a member to serve on the SAE Aerospace Council.

Richard Ambroise, senior expert electronic & electrical at Lilium, will serve on the council and brings not only four decades of experience, with 20 years in the aviation sector on engine controls and latterly novel electric propulsion with Airbus, but also recent experience of a start-up: and throughout, using recognised industry standards. Mr. Ambroise is also a globally recognized standardization leader, having been a key member of the SAE E-36 committee on Electronic Engine Controls for over a decade: recently he served as the inaugural chair of the SAE E-40 Electrified Propulsion committee developing standards and recommended practices to accelerate the process to certification and establish robust supply chains.

Alastair McIntosh, CTO, of Lilium says, “SAE International’s work is crucial to aviation and maintaining the highest level of safety via collaboration from across the industry to develop global standardisation.  We are honoured to have the first AAM participant recognised by the organisation and look forward to Richard representing and contributing.”

The SAE Aerospace Council oversees a dynamic program of more than 180 standards technical committees, which maintain over 7,800 active consensus standards, material specifications, recommended practices and information reports. Recently, the Council has approved new committees and steering groups in the areas of AAM, certification of flight deck equipment, certification of process-intensive materials and advanced manufacturing.

Also joining the Council are two industry leaders:

  • Barrie Hicklin, Senior Director, Quality for Honeywell Aerospace. Mr Hicklin brings 33 years of global leadership experience in regulatory, quality and aftermarket operations and plays a critical role with the SAE ITC Aerospace Engine Supplier Quality Group (AESQ), the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) and SAE G-22 committee. Mr. Hicklin is responsible for the Honeywell Aerospace Quality Management System and digital tools, Regulatory Production Approvals, 3rd party certifications for AS9100 and Nadcap processes as well as the Internal Audit program at site, Op Center, and Aero corporate level, FOD and Counterfeit Parts programs, and relations with DCMA and national aviation authorities worldwide.

  • William (Bill) Greene, Director Commercial Engine Airworthiness and Regulatory Affairs at Pratt & Whitney (P&W), part of the Raytheon Group (RTX). Mr. Greene has over 30 years in positions of increasing responsibility in Engineering and is responsible for evolving and integrating P&W’s certification and safety processes across the Engineering Organization for Pratt & Whitney, including ODA and SMS. He engages and interfaces with regulatory authorities and customers worldwide and holds several U.S. patents.

David Alexander, senior director, standards at SAE International said, “SAE International is honoured to facilitate the convening of global industry and government leaders to set the standard for aviation and we welcome the significant experience that Richard, Barrie and Bill will bring to the Aerospace Council. In addition, we recognise and celebrate the importance of extending the Council’s membership to benefit from the perspectives of new entrants with participation at this strategic level through Lilium.”
