Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium™ Releases Best Practice for Automated Driving System Remote Assistance Use Case

Document Addresses Remote Assistance for ADS in Situations Exceeding ADS Design Capabilities

WARRENDALE, Pa. (Nov. 29, 2023) – The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium™ (AVSC), a program of SAE Industry Technologies Consortia (SAE ITC®), announces the availability of the AVSC Best Practice for ADS Remote Assistance Use Case. This best practice provides a framework for incorporating remote assistance (RA) in an automated driving system (ADS). By using this framework, ADS developers and operators can augment ADS capabilities while improving performance and efficiency.
Automated driving system-dedicated vehicles (ADS-DVs) can handle a wide variety of circumstances they may encounter on the road. When circumstances are encountered that exceed ADS design capabilities, the ADS is designed to bring the vehicle into a minimal risk condition (MRC). When an ADS-DV encounters these conditions-identified as "triggers" within this best practice-they can request RA from a remotely located human operator. RA involves the provision of guidance, suggestions, or recommendations to a vehicle from a remote location, without direct control of the vehicle.
“We are excited about this best practice because it clarifies what Remote Assistance is and that can be used as an approach to address the challenges an ADS may encounter in ambiguous situations." said Jennifer Grider, Principal Engineer of the AVSC Team.
