SAE International® Revises Foundational Aviation Safety Standards

Updates Offer Continued Guidance to Aviation OEMs, Suppliers, and Regulators in a Rapidly Transforming Industry

WARRENDALE, Pa. (Dec. 20, 2023)SAE International’s S-18 Aircraft and Systems Development and Safety Assessment Committee, working with EUROCAE WG-63 is proud to release revisions of two critical aviation systems safety recommended practices used for product assurance and certification of aircraft. The documents address technical changes and advancements in aviation over recent years.

The two aerospace recommended practices, ARP4754BTM-Guidelines for Development of Civil Aircraft and Systems and ARP4761ATM-Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment act as a set. Taken together, they form the foundation of modern aviation safety and because of their significance, the 2023 revisions represent a major milestone in aircraft development. Furthermore, the committee is also working on the application of these practices for unmanned and autonomous systems, as well as introducing Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) through companion documents.

“The committee has put in a huge amount of work over recent years to bring major updates into these foundational documents which are a critical part of aviation safety. We salute the committee and the working group for their efforts – brought together through the collaboration of stakeholders: worldwide and across industry and regulatory authorities and with our productive partnership with EUROCAE,” said David Alexander, senior director of aerospace standards, SAE International.

ARP4754BTM is considered the “what to do book.” This document discusses the development of aircraft systems, taking the overall aircraft operating environment and functions into account. This includes validation of requirements and verification of the design implementation for certification and product assurance.

ARP4754BTM is available here: https://saemobilus.sae.org/content/ARP4754B/.

ARP4761ATM is considered the “how to do it book,” which describes guidelines and methods of performing the safety assessment for certification of aircraft.

ARP4761ATM is available here: https://saemobilus.sae.org/content/ARP4761A/.

The release of these significant revisions is coupled with new training courses to help safety and aviation professionals use them to their fullest:
