Heavy-duty vehicles used for earthmoving, road building, and maintenance tasks must accomplish several very important things: perform as required, allow for safe use by operators, and effectively alert their presence to others.
SAE International’s Lighting and Sound Committee develops technical standards covering safety sounds, lighting, and marking for off-road, self-propelled work machines and equipment. The committee recently released a revised SAE Standard, J2121: Requirements for Composite Lighting Assemblies Used on Construction and Industrial Machinery.
This revised standard covers design performance requirements and related vibration test procedures for vehicle lighting assemblies, other than signaling and marking devices, that contain multiple components. The revised document also includes provisions for replacing incandescent light sources in the assemblies with LED sources.
The OPTC3, Lighting and Sound Committee is part of the SAE Operator Protection Technical Advisory Group. Participants in the committee include OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and others across the construction and forestry industries.
Over 16 related standards documents have been published to date by the committee and 3 are currently in development. SAE welcomes industry professionals with experience in the subject matter to volunteer as a member of the committee.
