The SAE J3300 recommended practice is a family of documents that establish a procedure to certify the fundamental driving skills of professional drivers operating automobiles and light trucks. Also open to the public, the certification can be used by drivers to qualify their skill level when seeking employment as a professional driver or other activity. Certification is provided through Probitas Authentication®.
Developed by the SAE Driving Skills Standards Committee, the J3300 guidance documents promote a higher level of driving competence, consistency, control, and safety for professional drivers. This certification is in demand by test facilities, vehicle development teams, and other organizations that use skilled drivers. The document certification levels include:
- J3300 – Driving Levels (DL1-DL4)
- J3300/1- Low Mu (friction)/Winter Driving
- J3300/2-Trailer Towing
- J3300/3-Automated Driving Systems
At the SAE WCX2024 industry meeting earlier this year in Detroit, attendees enthusiastically participated in a Ride and Drive event featuring various EVs and included a simulation of the SAE J3300 driver certification test. A similar unique event is planned for WCX2025.
SAE J3300 is useful for anyone concerned with the skills and safety practices of those operating vehicles. The documents reflect current industry practice for driving skills and safety per the ongoing consensus views of OEMs, suppliers, independent test facilities, and other driving-related organizations.
Benefits of the J3300 documents and certification program include credibility for drivers from a globally recognized source, improved driving skills, reduced chances of injury or damage, and cost savings.
