Special Issue on the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Sustainable Transportation Systems

Transportation systems are highly complex and influence the daily activities of various stakeholders. Sustainable transportation systems are important for combatting the high levels of emissions released from traditional transport systems as well as being an integral feature of smart cities of the future. Targeting the improved performance of transport systems, the concept of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) has received increasing attention in both academia and industry. In the near future, vehicles, travelers, and the infrastructure will collectively have billions of sensors that can communicate with each other. Taking full advantage of this big data, we can accomplish informed decision making on improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, etc. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to play an important role in the development of intelligent systems. Research communities have begun to find ways to achieve sustainability by taking advantage of emerging AI techniques. Therefore, it is the aim of this special issue to solicit papers related to the applications of AI or machine-learning techniques to improve the overall sustainability of any transportation system, including its infrastructure, vehicles, operations, and maintenance. Empirical studies and the development of new solutions leveraging AI techniques over a wide range of areas, including design, manufacturing, logistics, and physical-asset management are sought. The level of analysis could be local, regional, or national, and methods employed could range from regression models to deep artificial neural networks. Papers that take multidisciplinary approaches or perspectives are particularly encouraged.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessment of environmental impacts via the use of artificial intelligence or machine-learning techniques
  • Big-data analytics and AI applications in improving sustainability
  • Application of AI technologies for analyzing and controlling traffic flows
  • Challenges and opportunities in the application of AI in sustainable transportation systems
  • New data processing frameworks for handling masses of transportation systems data
  • Application of AI or machine-learning techniques for improving sustainability in Smart Cities
